Serbian Superliga

Serbian football League or simply called as "Serbian SuperLiga" is Serbian's professional league for football clubs. At the top of the Serbian football league system, it is the country's primary football competition. It is contested by 16 clubs, operating a system of promotion and relegation with the Serbian First League (Prva liga Srbija, second Serbian football tier). The SuperLiga was formed during summer 2004 as the country's top football league competition in Serbia and Montenegro. Since summer 2006 after the secession of Montenegro from Serbia, the league only has Serbian clubs.

Serbian clubs used to compete in the Yugoslav First League. This competition was formed in 1923 and lasted until 2003. After the downfall of SFR Yugoslavia in 1991 a new Yugoslavia would be formed that would be named FR Yugoslavia with Montenegro and Serbia. They kept the name Yugoslavia until 2003 when the country changed its name to Serbia and Montenegro: this union lasted until 2006 when Montenegro gained independence and formed its own league, the Montenegrin First League.

The current SuperLiga champions are Partizan. UEFA currently ranks the league 21st in Europe. The league was known as Meridian SuperLiga from Autumn 2004 until Summer 2008. The league's current official sponsor is beer maker Jelen pivo, thus resulting in the league's official name to be Jelen SuperLiga.

The Serbian national football team mostly is composed of the first three clubs, in which the International recruitments from football teams have strengthens the Clubs. Football in Serbia

Football in Serbia is the most popular team sport. It has been played from the beginning of the 20th century and there were a number of very successful Serbian football players and coaches throughout history. One of Serbia's top football clubs FK Crvena Zvezda has won the prestigious European Champions Cup in the season 1990-1991 and has also won the Intercontinental Cup the same year.

Football first came to Serbia in the spring of 1896. Jewish student Hugo Buli, after he returned from his studies in Germany, brought the first football to Belgrade. He brought the ball to his friends from the Belgrade gymnastics society "Soko", and founded the football section on 12 May.

The national team of Serbia has played its first match on 19 May 1911, and lost to HAŠK by 0:8. The next day, on 20 May, they played the second match, which they also lost, by 0:6. The Zagreb newspapers reported from these matches with credits to the Serbian team for its efforts and braveness to challenge the much better rival. The Serbian newspapers already then showed that the Serbian public does not easily accept defeat, although it is part of the game.

BSK dominated the state scene until the beginning of World War II. The end of the war was the beginning of the reconstruction, and the devastated football grounds and stadia, as well as the football clubs needed to be restored. On 25 February 1945, the football club Metalac was founded, later its name was changed into BSK, and then into OFK Beograd, as successor to the tradition of the glorious pre-war Belgrade sports club (BSK). The Red Star (FK Crvena Zvezda) shined on 4th March 1945, and FK Partizan on 4th October of the same year. The football clubs of Vojvodina of Novi Sad, Borac of Čačak, Sloboda of Užice, and many other clubs were also restored.

Heading towards the World Cup

Serbia, who are competing in an international tournament for the first time on their own, having separated from Montenegro last year, enjoyed an impressive qualifying campaign for the European Championships and only lost two of their 14 games, finishing on 24 points, four behind group winners Poland and three behind Portugal. Serbia's competitiveness was shown by the fact that they remained unbeaten in all four games against the two group principals; their only defeats coming away to Belgium and Kazakhstan.

Continuing the same performance in the World Cup Qualifying rounds, they have defeated strong teams and now they are successful to Qualify for the World Cup. The main mission of the Captain is now to reach as close as possible to be the victorious.

Serbia Team in the Qualifiers race

For Serbia team, it was a chance to keep their automatic qualification dreams alive in the World Cup Qualifiers. For Serbia, it was also a chance to make that dream a reality. In other words, the football ones, Serbia had alead at France by 4 points with 3 games remaining until the end of the qualifiers for both sides. A victory for Serbia could sends the home nation packing for the 2010 World Cup, a draw could leaves Serbia in the driving seat in the race to qualify from the top, while a victory for France leaves Serbia on the top of the group but assures that the battle for automatic qualification lasts until the very end of the qualifiers.

So, while even a French victory wouldn’t have make them feel safe (their fate wouldn’t be in their own hands), it wouldn’t really have made Serbia feel comfortable going to the last round of qualifiers with some potentially tricky games against Romania and Lithuania left to be played in October.

Therefore, the White Eagles built their past successes, defeated the opponents on Wednesday successfully and qualified for the World Cup. The whole nation is proud of thier teams performace and praying for them now for the World Cup matches. The World Cup tickets of all matches are now available for sale. About Serbia Football Team

The national football team of Serbia , nicknamed White Eagles, is governed by the Football Association of Serbia and is associated with the UEFA. FIFA considers the team to be a direct descendant of the Serbia and Montenegro team, and the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia national team. Since from the begging the team has suffered a lot due to politics, because Serbian team was previously known as the Yugoslavia national football team from 15 January 1992 until 4 February 2003.

The Serbia national team is recognized, thanks to a mutual consent between both FIFA and UEFA, as the direct descendant of the Yugoslavia national team. Hence, the new national team formed in 1992 inherited of the full status, results, and achievements from Yugoslavia, which was not the case for any other country resulting from the breakup of Yugoslavia. Consequently, it did not have to apply to obtain a FIFA and UEFA status.

Now in World Cup 2010 South Africa, Serbia has qualified again for the World Cup. The World Cup tickets of all matches are now available for sale.
